Do you need to be a fast typist to be a transcriber?

In our previous post on typing speed, we answered the question, "Does Typing Speed Matter in Transcription?"

Since then, we've been receiving questions from applicants if they need to be fast typists to apply for a transcriber position at Umritun even if they are not fast typists.

The quick answer is not really.

Even if you are not a fast typist, you can still be a transcriber. Although typing speed matters in transcription work, it's not the only thing that we look for in a transcriber/transcriptionist.

How Fast Should My Typing Speed Be As A Transcriber?

A good starting speed is 40-60 words per minute.

You do not need to be a fast typist to be a transcriber. However, you must have excellent grammar and be able to type accurately. Transcription is a very detail-oriented job, and it is important that you are able to produce quality work and deliver complete work on time.

While some people may be able to type quickly and still produce high-quality transcriptions, others may find that they need more time to ensure accuracy. Ultimately, the speed at which someone can type will not necessarily dictate their ability to be a successful transcriber; it is more important that they are able to accurately capture all the details of the audio they are listening to.

Here's a short video to explain the correlation between typing speed and productivity.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Yes, practice can improve typing speed. Remember, typing is a skill that can be improved through repetition and practice. With enough practice, you can become a faster and more accurate typist and transcriber.

The best way to improve your typing skills is to find a comfortable workstation, set a goal for yourself, and then practice regularly. Remember to focus on your accuracy as well as your speed.

Don't let your typing speed stop you from applying for a transcriber position. You may be slow at first, but with practice, you can improve your speed. Before you know it, you'll be typing at 80-100 words per minute without breaking a sweat!
